JOFFIS — Jogja Fotografis Festival is an international photographic festival organised by Ruang MES 56. The festival will be held in Yogyakarta in August–September 2023. The idea of the festival is developed on of the need of a broader understanding about photography; both in practice and in theory, as well as in public daily life and in intellectual discourse.
The broader understanding of photography (the festival uses the term ‘the photographic’) will open domains and debates that seem to have been excluded from photography, which then can lead to findings of photography as perspective and method that has its own aesthetic power. This approach is needed to push the emergence of new talents and new subjects, which in turn will push the development of photographic discourse and market, as an important part of art industry in general.
As an idea, the photographic can also be found in artistic practice within other mediums, such as fine art, performing arts, even literary art. It is hoped that the photographic practice in other artistic mediums is not merely borrowing photographic products as a complement or supplement to the work. On the contrary, the photographic perspective can actually be used as an authoritative artistic method and aesthetic element.
In terms of knowledge production, JOFFIS will work in two domains, namely intellectual discourse and public discourse. The intellectual discourse will talk about or search for perspective, which will later be derived into photographic aesthetic method for academics, artists, photographers, and photography enthusiasts. To achieve this goal, the festival will conduct exhibitions, seminars, discussions, and research about the festival’s theme. Meanwhile, the public discourse will aim towards the practices and consequences of today’s photographic condition, which will dissect social, economic, and political domains, especially within the context of surveillance and the modification of the consensus and behaviour of the public by corporations and nation. Activities planned including literacy campaign through social media, community meetup, game play, and bazaar.
