Loka Padha menyajikan foto-foto arsip Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX koleksi Keraton Yogyakarta.

Loka Padha: Photography Works from the Archives of Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX

Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX was a photographer. His camera along with a number of photographic ephemera are displayed in the Hamengku Buwono IX Museum within the Yogyakarta Palace complex. However, we don’t know much about the photos he took.

Through thorough archival research, the JOFFIS team, in collaboration with the curatorial team of the Yogyakarta Palace, discovered numerous photo albums created by Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX. These albums contain a variety of photos, including panoramic views of nature, city development, event reportage, and even personal documentation of the Sultan’s state visits.

“Loka Padha” presents archival photos from the collection of Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX at the Yogyakarta Palace. Beyond being mere snapshots in time, each moment captured in the photos is framed with a careful consideration of angles by the photographer himself. This exhibition reveals several historical events in Yogyakarta, such as the construction of the Syuhada Mosque in the Kotabaru area in 1951 and the eruption of Mount Merapi in 1969.
